NSW: Coalition launches rural crime squad policy

New South Wales Opposition Leader JOHN BROGDEN has released his second policy in asmany days, committing more police to fighting rural crime.

Mr BROGDEN and state National Party leader GEORGE SOURIS have been meeting with farmersin Dubbo today, launching a policy to create a specialist squad to fight rural crime acrossthe state.

Under the plan, 32 police officers would work in a specialist squad attached in non-metropolitanstations.

Mr BROGDEN says officers would be encouraged to harness the expertise of local communitieswhen investigating rural crime.

And as additional officers, they would be able to take proactive steps to prevent ruralcrime, such as visiting saleyards.

Mr SOURIS says the rural crime squad would work with the livestock industry to developa permanent livestock identification system in NSW.

A rural crime squad headquarters would also be set up in a regional area.
